Brikawood: An ecological house built with wooden bricks

The construction of a house has never looked so simple and fun. French startup Catharhome has developed an ecological and economical wooden brick named Brikawood.

Situated in the Pyrenees, Catharhome has specialised in innovative products for wood construction for 30 years. Brikawood are wooden bricks which can be built like a Lego, without glue neither nails nor screws. This is the idea of engineer Alain Romero and it has taken him three years of research to develop it with the help of Patricia Dutreux. They have invested 330 000 Euros in this project.

Built like a Lego, without glue neither nails nor screws

The principle with these bricks is to produce timber frame walls for any type of architecture and thus enter the chain of sustainable development. They have been designed so as to limit the handling and the energy consumption.
Comprising four wood elements, two side plates that provide structure and two spacers for its structural coherence, it is designed to allow their engagement to maintain between each other and thus give the wall a structural coherence. You need a rubber hammer to mount the bricks and a drill to secure the sill plate on the slab and the wall cap to close the walls and after blowing and conditioning the insulation (wood chips).

Brikawood developed three different models by its widths each with a feature in the structure: the basic brick width 500mm, the half-brick basic 250mm width, the corner brick width of 500 mm and 750 mm (incoming angle and outgoing angle).

According to the promoters, this brick is also economically viable. “A square meter costs between 920 to 1000 Euros against 1600 Euros at least for a traditional wood frame,” says Patricia Dutreux. “The price out of water out of air is at 1200 Euros the walls, roofing and joineries. The total cost is thus 1800 Euros for a turnkey house, fully completed by authorised professional teams of Brikawood.”

Various tests were carried out with freezing rain simulations from zero to less 20 degrees and they proved satisfactory compared to houses with stacked beam poles. Brikawood can also withstand earthquakes of 8.5 on the Richter scale.

  3. I don’t see how this could possibly be more economical than standard framing. Looks like it would use a heck of a lot more wood than usual, plus the spacing of the interior “framing” doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for insulation. Add that to the extend of thermal bridging and it seems really inefficient.

  4. I have fallen in love with the Brikawood designs. Would this be available in Australia at all? If so would you be able to inform me of the pricing?

  8. I live in south east Texas. I love the look of your product and would like to know more information about construction in the United States. I as Jackie do not understand or can read French. I’m interested in the process as well. I would love an email exchange to understand further and to discuss home options. Thanks.

  11. Hello is there a possibility of creating a building with pricing and measurements in the US? Great idea. Thank you. Kris

  12. Friend of mine in Tennessee has told me about the product we would certainly like to know all of the specs details and pricing information logistics distribution dealers etc. could you please put us in charge of someone from the firm that can give English language version of the website and I see many other people are inquiring as to price basis etc.DCO.

  13. How can this be ecological, you are using wood which is not very sustainable. I can see if using bamboo or cork, but that would not be practical as use of regular wood would be needed.
As well, your home would become not only nesting grounds for pests, but it would eventually be eaten away by termites.
Not a very practical housing material.

    • Before shortsighted industrialists focused on slash-and-burn economics, there were plenty of (and in fact still are) sustainable forests, where harvest is governed by growth.

That this is ecological is the result of using shorter lengths which should equal less waste of each tree cut.

“Regular” wood has been used for thousands of years as a suitable building material. ALL materials will eventually degrade from various causes.

    • Bruce, I totally agree with you. This is a very expensive experiment! Ecoamigable either, you must cut many more trees. It’s not convenient, and that’s why you have no way to buy it. Does not exist. It is just one more article.

      • If it exists… It just takes to read the article, and click on the link, to check it out.
        Nothing really complicated to do!

  14. The website can be translated by Google, they have a contact link at the bottom that I am sure a lot of English speaking people can use to ask their questions. Also in France they use meters and not feet or inches so you may want to do the math for conversations first. This is a news website and they do NOT have the ability to answer your questions for the company

    • Thank you Laura for summarizing what we’re trying to explain since months… Looks like very few people take the time to read the header or understand what Inspir’Action is all about!

Now we talked with the owner of Brikawood. She’s overwhelmed by the success of Brikawood and quite ready to sell the rights for North America.
Selling price is in the range of the 4M€

  15. I am amazed at the sheer volume of inquiries on a website that has expressly stated: “Please do NOT contact the news team… we are NOT owners nor reseller…”

Ferfuxake people, READING is fundamental to comprehension.

  16. could you please put us in charge of someone from the firm that can give English language version of the website and I see many other people are inquiring as to price basis etc.

  17. The best part about this is all the people contacting you for info despite your making it very clear you have nothing to do with the company only provided an article about. Read folks read, find a translator, heck find a French teacher at a local school. Lol.

    • Thanks for stressing this. We keep getting requests and questions but we have stopped answering… I’m just amazed at this and I keep asking myself how can people skip reading the warning telling that we’re just publishers and not manufacturers…?!!

    • I was about to write the same thing. Great article about an interesting product with all the manufacturer details to hand.

  18. On the site, there are there is an orange square with three lines on the top right corner.
    Click on it.
At the bottom of the drop-down menu you will read “Français”.
Click on the + sign next to it.
It will read English on the dro-down menu.

    Voilá.

  19. We do have a comment section as you can see, where people keep asking the same thing 100 times, in spite of stating clearly that:
    1. We’re not brikawood but a media
    2. To check Brikawood’s contact details instead of contacting us over and over
This is the most interesting social case study, where you realize that people just don’t bother to read, and keep asking the same old question (since over 18 months now).
Any suggestion on how we could get people to read thoroughly, so that we dont have to answer again and again the same thing?!
    The editor
