TO INSPIRE & TO ACT – WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER WORLD

One-third of the world’s electricity to be green in 2050

Solar panel

In its annual report on energy technologies published on 1 June 2016, entitled Energy Technology Perspectives 2016, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said the installation of solar panels on the roofs of buildings could afford to provide one-third of the power consumption of the towns within 40 years.

The same report points out that two-thirds of the growth in global energy consumption by 2050 would come from cities whether we live in a developed or emerging country. “Cities must take the lead in the transition to a low-carbon energy sector”, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in the report ‘Towards Sustainable Urban Energy Systems’.

Finding sources of green energy

The report also states that more than one million electric vehicles were in circulation in the world last year. The IEA finds this figure significant even if it is insufficient compared to the ambition to deploy more than a billion electric vehicles by 2050 with the objective to limit global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.
Without real awareness or change in current policy, these growing demands will double the CO2 emissions in urban centers at that time. The challenge of finding sources of “green” energy is therefore crucial.
